The 2026 NYS volunteer recruitment ran physically at sub-county centres from 16 to 21 March 2026 and is closed. NYS has since published a June shortlist for a separate 2026 special-officer-cadet and private exercise. The volunteer intake is a service-and-training programme—basic paramilitary training, national service and technical or vocational training—not an online job application or a guaranteed route into another uniformed service.

No intake is currently open. Applications only ever run through the official NYS portal during announced windows.

See confirmed dates in the Kenya recruitment calendar. For the next update, the fallback text above must be changed if NYS again uses physical centres rather than a portal.

Who qualifies for NYS recruitment?

The official 2026 volunteer advert required applicants to:

  • Kenyan citizen, national ID in hand;
  • be 18–24 years old;
  • hold at least KCSE mean grade D (plain);
  • present original ID and academic certificates plus one set of copies;
  • hold a valid police-clearance certificate;
  • undergo medical examination and basic paramilitary training; and
  • be ready to serve anywhere in Kenya.

The advert did not list marriage or parenthood as a condition. These are 2026 volunteer criteria, not a promise for the next intake. Check your NYS eligibility and then confirm every answer against the new advert.

How do I apply?

The 2026 volunteer intake used scheduled physical recruitment centres, not an online application:

  1. Watch for the intake announcement on nys.go.ke and official NYS channels (and our alerts).
  2. Find your sub-county, date and centre in the official schedule; applicants had to be residents of the sub-county where they reported.
  3. Report with the stated originals and copies and take part in document and medical checks.
  4. Successful candidates follow their calling letters to the NYS Paramilitary Academy in Gilgil or NYS Technical Training Institute in Naivasha, as the 2026 advert directed.
  5. Use only NYS notices and contacts for reporting instructions; do not pay a person to add a name to a list.

What does NYS actually offer?

NYS’s strategic-pillars page describes six months of basic paramilitary training, followed by one year of national service and then technical or vocational training. It lists deployment across public projects and training through NYS institutions. The public page does not publish a universal current stipend or guarantee police or KDF absorption. NYS service can still provide real experience and records for a first-job CV; every later employer applies its own criteria.

NYS vs KDF vs Police — which path when?

KDF and police recruit into their services under separate statutes and adverts. NYS combines voluntary national service and training. An NYS graduate may apply when a later KDF or police advert permits and must still meet every requirement. The 2025 NPSC advert encouraged qualified NYS graduates to apply, but that was not a guaranteed place or automatic absorption.

Life inside NYS: what recruits should actually expect

An honest preview reduces both dropout and disappointment. Gilgil is genuinely tough: the paramilitary phase runs on dawn PT, drill, inspections and collective discipline — recruits who arrive having trained (running base, basic calisthenics) absorb it; those expecting a college experience struggle in week one. Service deployment is work: construction sites, agricultural projects, national programmes — manual, scheduled, supervised, with the stipend as pocket money atop full board. The recruits who thrive treat deployment as a paid apprenticeship in showing up. Technical school is the pivot: stream selection matters more than most recruits realise — driving/plant operation exits into immediate employability, building trades into the construction market, catering into hospitality; choose against the job market, not the cohort’s fashion (what each trade pays). Documents to collect before exit: completion certificates, trade certificates and licences, service testimonial, and named referees from your unit — the package that converts service into shortlists, structured exactly as the first-job CV guide prescribes.

Frequently asked questions

Is NYS recruitment free?

Completely — application, vetting, training and deployment. The intake windows attract the same slot-selling fraud as other services; nobody can sell NYS admission, and payment requests are theft (recognise the scripts).

Does NYS pay a salary?

NYS’s public recruitment advert does not publish a universal current stipend amount. Read the calling letter and official terms for the cohort before budgeting or accepting a figure circulated online.

How long does NYS service last?

NYS’s strategic-pillars page describes six months of basic paramilitary training followed by one year of national service, then technical or vocational training. The total time depends on the training stream and current programme terms.

Can NYS graduates join KDF or the police?

Yes, if you meet that service’s current advert. The 2025 police advert encouraged NYS graduates meeting all minimum requirements to apply and asked for an NYS discharge certificate where applicable; it did not promise selection. KDF likewise uses its own category rules.

Can I leave NYS before completing service?

The public 2026 recruitment advert does not set out early-exit rights or consequences. Ask NYS for the written terms that apply to your cohort before making a decision; do not rely on a former recruit’s contract.

What technical courses does NYS offer?

NYS describes technical and vocational training across its institutions, but course availability can vary by institution, capacity and cohort. Use the current course or placement notice supplied by NYS rather than a historic catalogue.
